Ray Pomponio, MS

Ray Pomponio is a data scientist at the University of Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital, with research focused on public health surveillance of respiratory viruses. He holds a master’s in biostatistics, with training in advanced statistical modeling of missing and correlated data. As an applied statistician with collaborative experience in fields ranging from neuroscience and medical imaging to clinical pulmonology, Ray’s expertise is in analyzing complex datasets under the direction of domain experts, typically principal investigators or physician scientists. Across collaborations, his skills in scientific communication and project management enable him to deliver timely, high-quality analyses that are interpretable to the relevant research audience.

Ray is also an avid rock climber and part-time alpinist. He’s climbed in 12 US states plus Mexico, tallying over 1,000 routes since beginning outdoor climbing in 2019. In 2025, Ray became the Rock Climbing Coordinator for the Explorer’s Club of Pittsburgh (ECP). The ECP has been active since 1947 in both local Appalachian adventures as well as international expeditions in the Andes and Himalayas. More information is available on the ECP website. Ray’s new position involves keeping the club’s 400+ membership body aware of climbing-related news and industry developments, and planning annual trips to popular climbing desintaions on the East Coast (i.e., Seneca Rocks, the New River Gorge, or the Gunks in upstate NY).
